Could Mounjaro and Wegovy counter Menopausal Weight Gain?
On average, women gain around a pound each year during this stage of life - and about one in five women gain ten pounds or more. For many, healthy eating and exercise no longer feel enough. Could Mounjaro or Wegovy counteract weight gain from falling oestrogen levels?
Weight gain during menopause is one of the most common frustrations women share with us. As oestrogen levels fall, metabolism slows, body fat redistributes (often to the abdomen), and insulin resistance creeps up. This is where new treatments like Wegovy (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) come in.
How Do These Medications Work?
Both Wegovy and Mounjaro were originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, but have since been shown to be highly effective for weight management.
Wegovy works by mimicking a natural gut hormone (GLP-1), helping regulate blood sugar and suppress appetite.
Mounjaro targets two pathways—GLP-1 and GIP—making it even more powerful for appetite control and metabolism.
What the Research Says
Wegovy (semaglutide):
Large studies show women can expect meaningful weight loss—around 6% of body weight at three months and 11% at six months on average. This also comes with improvements in blood sugar control and cardiometabolic health.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide):
In the landmark SURMOUNT-1 trial, patients lost between 15–21% of their body weight over 72 weeks, depending on the dose. A three-year extension found that much of this weight loss was maintained long-term. Emerging data suggest postmenopausal women on hormone therapy (HRT) may see even greater benefit, with tirzepatide plus HRT producing more weight loss than tirzepatide alone.
Why This Matters in Menopause
For women in midlife, these medications may:
Counteract abdominal fat gain linked to falling oestrogen
Improve insulin sensitivity, lowering the risk of diabetes and heart disease
Work even better when combined with HRT
That said, they’re not quick fixes. Digestive side effects are common, and weight regain is likely if treatment stops. These medicines are best viewed as long-term tools, working alongside lifestyle habits and, where appropriate, hormone therapy.
The Bottom Line
Both Wegovy and Mounjaro show strong, science-backed results for weight management in women, including those going through menopause. While Wegovy is effective, Mounjaro appears even more powerful - especially in women using hormone therapy.
The right choice depends on your health history, goals, and doctor’s advice. For many women, these medications can offer much-needed support in navigating the metabolic shifts of menopause, helping you feel healthier and more in control at this stage of life.
Please Note: There is a theoretical possibility of Mounjaro and Wegovy reducing the absorption of oral progestogen. It would be advisable to seek clinical advice from your medical weight loss clinician if taking oral progestogen in conjunction with injectable weight loss medication. We would provide individual advice should this apply to you…
