The Golden Dose and Other Unicorns…

The Truth about the Mounjaro “Golden Dose”
(a.k.a. the “Magic Fifth Dose”)

If you’ve spent any time on the socials, you’ve probably seen rumours about a supposed “golden dose” of Mounjaro - sometimes called the “magic fifth dose.” The idea is that there’s a sneaky extra shot left in the pen after you’ve taken the four weekly doses. So… is that real? Sorry like the mythical unicorn, it simply doesn’t exist, and we shall explain!

What people mean by “golden dose”

When people refer to a “golden dose,” they’re referring to a the liquid that appears to remain in the pen after you’ve administered the four measured weekly doses. It can look like there’s enough left for just one more injection.

Here’s the important bit: that leftover isn’t a bonus. Pens are designed with a little extra medication on purpose. An apparent “overfill” helps the pen deliver each dose accurately and allows for a flow check you do before injecting, priming a dose and removing the bubbles, and a little user miscalculation. It’s standard practice with many injectable medicines.

So could I take a fifth dose from the same pen?

Seeing medication left in the pen it can feel tempting to utilise. But that small extra is there as a contingency to safeguard an accurate dose, and priming the pen before use.

Trying to extract then inject what’s left in the pen can introduce real risks:

  1. Sterility. Pens are meant to be used as directed and then discarded on schedule - after 30 days. Trying to extract ‘leftovers’ with other syringes, or using a pen beyond its intended timeframe, can introduce real risk of bacteria and increase infection risk.

  2. Underdosing. The leftover isn’t a full, calibrated dose.

  3. Overdosing. Without the pen’s design which features built‑in controls, you could accidentally take too much, which raises the chance of side effects like feeling nauseous, sickness, diarrhoea or the other extreme, constipation.

“Hacks” you might see online - and why to skip them

Don’t try pulling another dose from a pen. You may come across posts on forums and social media about tricks using insulin syringes to pull out the remainder for a “fifth dose.” It might sound clever, but it isn’t safe - the people telling you to do this are not medical professionals. You can’t know the true amount you’re drawing up, you bypass the safety features of the pen, and you add contamination risk. It’s just not worth it.

What to do instead

  • Stick to your prescribed schedule. Mounjaro is typically taken once a week. After four weekly doses, the pen is finished - we mean it! - even if a bit of liquid seems to remain.

  • Use the pen as instructed. Follow the official instructions for priming/flow checks and injections, there’s a great enclosed pamphlet included. If you’re ever unsure about a dose being administered correctly just get in touch.

  • Talk to your us if something feels off. If you’re not seeing the results you expected, or side effects are bothering you, don’t self‑adjust. Mova Medical will help you find the right dose and pace on your weight loss journey.

Bottom line

  • The leftover liquid you see is intentional overfill for accuracy and safety - not an extra, usable dose.

  • Trying to extract it can lead to underdosing, overdosing, and contamination risks.

  • Your best Mounjaro “pen trick” is no pen trick at all: use the pen exactly as directed and check in with a Mova Medical clinician if you need to adjust your plan.

  • Work with Mova Medical, not by squeezing one more injection out of a pen - it really is a false economy, and actually risky!

Always follow the instructions that come with your medication and if in any doubt about your treatment contact Mova Medical Immediately.
